Physical Therapy

therapeutic exercisePhysiotherapy is a primary health care profession that can be found in hospital settings and private clinics, dealing with a variety of musculoskeletal, neurological and cardio-respiratory conditions. Physiotherapists are highly-educated experts in physical function, movement and mobility.

electro-therapeutic modalitiesWe have advanced knowledge of how the human body moves and what can stop it from moving, and use specialized hands-on treatment to restore, maintain and maximize optimal function and quality of life. In order to improve your mobility, function and well being, physiotherapists use a combination of electro-therapeutic modalities such as ultrasound or TENS for example, along with therapeutic exercises, and hands on techniques referred to as manual therapy (deep soft tissue techniques, hands-on joint and muscle range of motion and stretching) or manipulation (a quick small thrust to a "stuck joint" to restore mobility). We may also incorporate some non-traditional therapies such as acupuncture.

manual therapyAt TAWA Physical Therapy, we assess, diagnose and treat a broad range of musculoskeletal conditions that can affect our joints, soft tissues and nerves. When physical problems arise, you can count on us to help you regain control of your body and normal life.

Your therapist will collaborate with your referring doctor or specialist, but you do not necessarily need a doctor's referral unless requested by your insurance company. Contact our clinic to find out more about how you can see a physical therapist today.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is the scientific manipulation of the soft tissues of the body for the purpose of normalizing those tissues and consists of a group of manual techniques that include applying fixed or movable pressure, holding, and/or causing movement of or to the body. Our massage therapists are trained in various techniques that affect the muscular, skeletal, circulatory, lymphatic, nervous, and other systems of the body. The basic philosophy of massage therapy embraces the concept of vis Medicatrix naturae, which is aiding the ability of the body to heal itself, and is aimed at achieving or increasing health and well-being.

massage therapyAlthough there were periods when massage fell out of favor, in the 1960s it made a comeback in a different way as a tool for relaxation, communication, and alternative healing. Today, massage is one of the most popular healing modalities. It is used by conventional, as well as alternative medical communities and is now covered by many health insurance plans.

Massage therapy can play a helpful role in the recovery of various musculoskeletal injuries, as well as being invaluable as a means of managing the physical side effects of day to day stress. As such, our massage therapy gift certificates can be a generous gift to a friend or loved one.

As of 2013, our clinic will play a role in massage therapy education as the hosting facility for the South Edmonton School of Massage Therapy.

Shockwave Therapy

manual therapyShockwave therapy, also known as extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) accelerates the healing process in the body by stimulating metabolism and enhancing blood circulation to regenerate damaged tissue. Strong energy pulses are applied to the affected area. These pulses of energy occur for short periods of time, creating micro-cavitation bubbles that expand and burst. The force created by these bubbles penetrates tissue and stimulates cells in the body that are responsible for tissue healing. In many instances, shockwave therapy is most effective in cases where the human body has given up trying to heal itself on its own, and thus can be used successfully without side effects for some of the most persistent conditions.

AcupunctureAn ancient remedy for modern times, acupuncture is a therapeutic method used to encourage natural healing, reduce or relieve pain and improve function of affected areas of the body. Acupuncture is safe and effective, often providing relief when traditional medical treatment has failed.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine sterile needles through the skin at specific points on the body. There is no injection of any substance and the treatment itself causes minimal if any discomfort. One of the most striking aspects to acupuncture is the almost complete absence of side effects from its use, and one doesn't need to believe in acupuncture for it to work.

Acupuncture stimulates the body to produce its own pain relieving chemicals called "endorphines". These chemicals attach to receptor sites found throughout the nervous system, and help to block pathways that relay pain messages from the body to the brain. The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture stimulates the body's natural healing abilities, reducing inflammation, and promoting physical and emotional well-being.

Custom Foot Orthotics

Foot orthoticsWhy do people have problems with their feet? It's simple. The foot is always in motion and under enormous pressure from the body's weight. As you walk or run, your entire weight lands on your feet, up to 15,000 times a day. Doctors and scientists know that with the proper orthotics, many problems with the feet, legs and lower back can be remedied. If you have experienced this type of discomfort, ask your practitioner about the innovative and proven Footmaxx system that provides relief quickly, easily and painlessly.
There is a secret to making orthotics that give you exactly the right correction - accurate measurements of the way you walk. In the past, doctors relied on plaster or foam casts to get a static impression of your feet. However, these casts record only the shape of the foot at rest not bearing any weight. The Footmaxx system uses a computerized dynamic analysis to help your therapist analyze your gait and prescribe the proper orthotics to make your feet function better.

Vestibular Rehabilitation

For those experiencing dizziness or vertigo, we have therapists who can provide treatment for several conditions brought on by vestibular dysfunction.  Most vestibular problems manifest as a form of dizziness as a result of insult to the vestibular labyrinth of the inner ear. This dizziness can be incapacitating and deter many activities of daily living.

The most common type of treatable dizziness is a result of crystals that are dislodged and roam in the semi-circular canals of the inner ear.  This is the mechanical cause of benign positional paroxysmal vertigo (BPPV).  Physical therapists who are trained to treat BPPV can provide relief for this problem through a non-invasive treatment that effectively removes those dislodged crystals.  There is also an important educational component to the resolution of this problem.

Treatment can also be provided for other forms of dizziness and problems of gaze stabilization that are a result of problems that occur in the inner ear and its vestibular center.
